We released today a public “appeal from AVETH” after the newspaper NZZ am Sonntag published an article about the alleged bullying and overall unethical treatment of doctoral students and postdocs by a professor in the Institute for Astronomy at the Department of Physics. As a reaction to this case, the institute at D-PHYS was suspended and an investigation launched. (see various links below for more information)
On the 26th of October AVETH, UZH’s Graduate Campus and VAUZ had their first joint Game Night! PhD candidates, postdocs and scientific staff from both ETH and UZH learned various strategy games, with a “Mafia” game winning the sympathy off all! Game Night was a big success and we hope to repeat it in the near future!
Last week AVETH visited Hagenholz waste incineration plant in Zürich. During the guided tour we learned that Switzerland produces more waste per capita compared to other countries. However, although the recycling rate of 54 percent is above the European average of 28 percent (2015), Switzerland is among the largest waste producers in Europe (730 kg of waste per capita in 2014). For comparison Germany (617 kg per capita in 2013), Austria (578 kg), Sweden (458 kg) and Iceland (345 kg) are the smaller waste producers. Since the introduction of landfilling ban in Switzerland on 1 January 2000, all non-recycled combustible waste must be incinerated.
Autumn is the perfect time to try new strategy games! For the first time AVETH and VAUZ organize joined “Game Night” with PhDs, postdocs and scientific staff from both ETH and UZH ! We will compete in the strategy games called “Saboteur”, “Codenames”, “Mafia” and other!
The 48th AVETH general assembly elected a number of new coordinators, board and commission members last September.
Are you interested in running a small business, organizing events for students (like PolyHACK and Career days) and help managing the job-platform ETHgethired?
Dear AVETH member, dear member of scientific staff of ETH Zurich,
An international meeting for all scientists and those interested in Gender and Science (Physics and Chemistry) organized by NCCR MUST and Excellence Cluster RESOLV. Speakers from Switzerland and Europe make presentations on key issues and initiatives to counter gender imbalance in science. What does the research show about the opportunities for women and men to achieve a successful scientific career? Are their barriers to career development? How do men and women combine family life and scientific research? What does gender have to do with physics and chemistry?
