Julián Cancino obtained his Master of Science in physics from ETH in 2011 and started a few months later his doctoral study in the Institute for Theoretical Physics, where he is part of the particle physics phenomenology group.
From 2007 to 2010 he was part of the board of the mathematics and physics students' association (VMP). In 2009, he joined the board of the students' union of ETH (VSETH).
He was vice president of scientific staff association at the department of physics (AMP) from May 2011 to March 2013. He joined the AVETH Politics Working Group (PoWoG), which he led ad interim from December 2011 to February 2012, when he took over the presidency of AVETH. He was reelected for a second term in February 2013.
His main interests are the relations with the department associations (Fachvereine) of AVETH [now part of the new domain internal affairs, led by Marc], the relations with other organizations within and outside ETH like PeKo (administrative and techincal personnel), VSETH (students), ACIDE (scientific staff EPFL), VAUZ (scientific staff Uni Zürich) [now part of the domain external affairs, led by Arnaud] and school politics in general. Since January 2013 he is vice president of the University Assembly (Hochschulversammlung).

Lars studied mechatronics at the university of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany since 2005 and received his degree in 2012. During his studies he was head of student representatives on departmental level for several years and organized several major student events. In 2010 he spent two semester at the University of New South Wales in Sydney (Australia).
Since June 2012, Lars is a member of the Wearable Group at the Electronics Laboratory. Within AVETH, he is responsible for the website and communications.

Martin Sack had studied Physics and received a Master's degree from ETH in 2008. Then he realised that one could possibly apply Physics to the world and enrolled for a PhD in Mathematics. Now he works on nonlinear dispersive equations, but not those that model real world phenomena. In his spare time Martin rides his bicycle. When the Sun has set he turns on the decks.
Martin was elected treasurer at the assembly of 5 September 2011.

Ima studied Technical Biology at the University of Stuttgart, Germany and obtained her diploma degree (Dipl. Biol., technically oriented) in 2008. During her studies she worked in the student association of the Technical Biologists and initiated the "interquer AG" for integration of foreign students and students joining from different courses. Currently, she is a PhD student with Prof. Viola Vogel in the Laboratory of Applied Mechanobiology (D-HEST) where she studies host pathogen interactions between immune cells and bacteria.
In AVETH, she is active in the commissions of Science City and Roundtable meetings, the psychological counsel (PBS) of UZH and ETH, as well as the awareness initiative (and as a deputy, the Hochschulversammlung).

Mamta Chabria is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Laboratory of Applied Mechanobiology and works towards understanding bacterial interaction with host extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. She has a Bachelor in Pharmacy (Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, India) and Masters in Molecular Bioengineering (Technische Universität Dresden, Germany) and PhD from ETH Zürich. Apart from science her interests are in traveling, cultural exchange and fusion cooking.
With AVETH, Mamta is responsible for services and policies that affect postdoctoral scholars.

Florian Emaury obtained his Master of Science in physics in 2010 from the Institut d'Optique ParisTech (IOGS) near Paris (FR). After one year working abroad, he joined in September 2011 the Ultrafast Laser Physics Group (Prof. Keller) at the Institut for Quantum Electronics at ETH, for working on laser developments. Within AVETH, he is the chairman of the Politic Working Group (PoWoG).

Maryam is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich. Her research interests are in control theory and its applications in power grid and air traffic systems. She completed her M.S. and Ph.D. at University of California, Berkeley and her B.S. at University of Waterloo, Canada.
During her graduate studies, Maryam volunteered weekly at elementary schools to teach mathematics and engineering to girls. Maryam loves the outdoors: swimming in Zürichsee, biking, hiking. At home, she enjoys playing piano and reading poetry.
Within AVETH, Maryam is responsible for events and matters related to postdocs.

Hello,
I am 24 years old, come from Lausanne where I did most of my study in Life Sciences and engineering (EPFL). I spent the last year of my master in the US at Harvard Medical School.
I am actually doing my PhD at the institute of human nutrition working on iron. During my undergraduate I actively took part to the student association life with the MUN (Model of United Nations). In my free time I enjoy outdoor activities, sport, arts and writing poetry.

Chris studied Mathematics at the University of Oxford and obtained his Masters there in 2010. After taking a gap year to do internships and backpack through South America, he started his PhD at ETH Zurich in the statistics institute, working on causal inference and graphical models (in essence, trying to tell apart causes from effects). In his free time he enjoys being out in nature, especially involving mountains (climbing, skiing) or water (sailing, windsurfing).
During his time at Oxford he served as president of the German society for one year. He joined the AVETH board in 2013 and is part of the events sub-committee.

Luisa studied electronic engineering at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy with a focus on electronic system design. As an exchange student she also spent one year at ETH Zurich. She received her master degree in December 2011.
Luisa joined the Wearable Computing Group at the Electronics Laboratory in February 2012. Within AVETH, Luisa is responsible for event organization.

Elke Schaper has studied biophysics in Berlin (DE), and afterwards complex adaptive systems in Göteborg (SE). Elke came to Zürich in autumn 2010 for a PhD in bioinformatics, trying to worm out some of nature's mysteries. She preferably spends her time with football, dancing, swimming, sailing, basically everything related to translation of body parts, and in Switzerland mountain hiking and skiing will definitely have to make it onto the list. Otherwise, Elke is enjoying baking, brewing, and hopefully soon cheese making and all other surprises life has in its luggage.
Elke is leader of Spots working group and active in social events organization, such as excursions, trips, pub evenings etc.

Katarina studied biotechnology with specialization towards food science at Chalmers University of technology in Göteborg (SE), where she graduated during the fall 2010. During the studies she was part of the Chalmers International Reception Committee (CIRC) and an active member and part of the board in the dance group Chalmersbaletten. The first semester of the master she spent in France during an Erasmus semester at Institut Nationale Polytechniqe de Grenoble (INPG). After the studies she worked for a while in Sweden before moving to Zurich and starting a PhD in food process engineering at the ETH in summer 2011.
On her free time she enjoys all sorts of sports and the challenge for last year was running the Berlin marathon. In AVETH she is active in organizing events.

Marc Stevens studied biology at the RWTH Aachen, Germany, receiving his diploma degree in 2001. Thereafter he went to the Dutch dairy Institute NIZO in Wageningen for a PhD in Microbiology.
Since 2008 he is working at the Laboratory for Food Biotechnology of ETZ Zurich where his research focuses on the genetics and physiology of food associated microorganisms, mainly lactic acid bacteria. This research will provide useful knowledge to enhance food safety, functionality and quality.
Within AVETH he is responsible for internal affairs and the contacts with the department associations.

Franziska Ullrich obtained her Master degree in mechanical engineering in May 2011 at ETH Zurich, focusing on robotics and control. After working a few months in China, she returned to ETHZ and started her doctoral study in the field of microrobotics. Before joining the AVETH board in February 2012, she was the president of the mechanical and electrical engineering student's association (AMIV) at ETHZ. Within AVETH, Franziska is active in organizing social events.

Michèle Grieder studied Sinology and East-Asian Art History at the University of Zurich and focused her studies on Tang-Dynasty textiles for her diploma paper. Since June 2001, she has taken care of the AVETH office with a 40% working contract. Her major tasks are administrating the AVETH member files, dealing with all kinds of correspondences, accounting, composing meeting records, organizing member assemblies, and the day-to-day office business.
Good food, singing and extensive journeys to Asia are some of her great passions. The next trip will lead her to Yunnan and the monastry on the Chicken-Foot-Mountain in South-China.

Eugen Zgraggen joined the Electronics/Metrology/Reliability Laboratory at Empa and the D-ITET at ETHZ as a research assistant and Ph.D. student in 2010. He received his B.Sc. & M.Sc. in Electrical Enginneering from ETHZ while spending part of his studies in Cambridge, UK and MIT, USA. His current research is about single-mode integrated polymer waveguide technology in collaboration with the IBM Research Labs.
In his free time, he likes exploring new countries and cultures, spends time looking at modern art, tries to learn spanish and to keep fit doing all kinds of sports.
Eugen is currently the president of telejob, the student-run academic job market. Therefore within AVETH, Eugen is responsible for Telejob.

Piotr Tokarczyk studied Geodesy and Cartography at the University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland. In November 2010 he started doctoral study at ETH Zurich, as a research assistant at the Chair of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing as a research assistant. His research focuses on feature extraction in remote sensing.
He prefers to spend his spare time outdoors, usually hiking/skiing somewhere far in the Swiss Alps, rowing on the Zürisee or promoting the folklore with dance. Within AVETH, Piotr is responsible for the finances of Telejob.
